| CO2 |
Carbon Dioxide
| DP |
Dwarf Puffer fish.
| FO |
Fish Only - Meaning there are no live plants, corals, or invertebrates.
| FOWLR |
Fish Only With Live Rock

| FW |
Fresh Water - Type of aquarium that contains no salt. Most common form of aquarium, tropical fish need Fresh Water.
| GBR |
German Blue Ram.
| GPH |
Gallons Per Hour - Used to rate filters.
| HO |
High Output fluorescent light
| HOB |
Hang on Back - The most popular type of filter on the market. This type of filter hangs on the back of the aquarium and a waterfall effect is created by it. An intake tube extends into the tank and then forced through the various media types in the filter. The water then pours out of the filter into the tank.

| PH |
Power Head or Power of Hydrogen (pH) - Power Head is a type of small filter that is used in long, wide tanks to create currents. They are also used to create currents for certain types of corals in saltwater tanks. Also, some people use Power Heads with Under Gravel filters (UGF) to do the filtering. pH is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a fluid. This can be important when keeping some types of fish that require certain water parameters.
| PPM |
Parts Per Million - Used in measuring levels of nitrite, nitrate, ammonia and other chemicals.
| PVC |
Poly Vinyl Chloride - Used for piping/plumbing or making caves and hiding spots.
| PWC |
Stands for Partial Water Change. These should be done weekly or every other week depending on how stocked your tank is. A PWC is basically removing some water and debris through the use of a gravel vacuum or even a cup. Then you replace the volume of water you removed with dechlorinated water. Typically you will want to change anywhere from 10-30% of your water.
| QT |
Quarantine Tank - Used to treat sick fish or quarantine new fish before adding to main tank.
| RO/DI |
Reverse osmosis followed by deionisation. Bascially a type of water purification.
| RUGF |
Reverse (Flow) Under Gravel Filter
| SW |
Salt Water - More costly and time consuming aquarium. Not recommended for beginners.
| UGF |
Stands for Under Gravel Filter. These were more popular years ago. They have now been replaced with more efficient Hang On Back (See HOB)or canister filters. The basic idea is that you insert a plastic plate that has slits in under your substrate. There are tubes that run up from under the plate. When an air pump or Power Head is connected to the tubes it forces the water up the tubes where it is filtered. It is either filtered by the media in the Power Head or by the gravel in the bottom of the tank if you are using an air stone.
